An Evening with Alan Menken

“Songs should have an infectious melody and rhythm and, I think, should elicit an emotion of happiness or of celebration or of sadness or of sorrow or of love or laughter, whatever” — Alan Menken

With this year’s D23 Expo upon us, I wanted to share one of the more memorable experiences that I had during that last Expo in 2017: a performance by Alan Menken.

The beginning pages of the 2017 Souvenir Guide listed all of the major panels and events that were taking place in Hall D23. Alan Menken’s show was listed on Sunday, the last day of the Expo, and I read the description to pass the time as I waited for other things.

A Whole New World of Alan Menken

Disney aficionados, film buffs and musical theater fans can expect a show like no other when eight-time Oscar-winner Alan Menken performs his own music and share entertaining anecdotes about his unrivaled career.

In all honesty, I hadn’t paid much attention to it for most of the weekend as I was too busy trying to get into the panels during the first two days.

However, when Sunday rolled around, I was singing a different tune.

“Trick or Tea” at Disneyland

Come, let us have some tea and continue to talk about happy things.

-Chaim Potok

Halloween Time at the Disneyland Resort is always a fun season to visit the parks. The Disneyland Hotel started hosting a Halloween-themed tea a few years back, which is a nice twist on their popular Classic Afternoon Tea.

I thoroughly enjoyed my last Disneyland afternoon tea. I had heard that this year’s Halloween theme showcased the Disney Villains and couldn’t wait to see what little details were added.

So, my friends and I dressed up in our Fall Finest and headed on down to the Disneyland Hotel for our Saturday reservation.

An Afternoon Tea Party at Disneyland

Back in January, the Disney Parks Blog announced that the Disneyland Hotel was going to start hosting Afternoon Tea on weekends. Naturally, as a Disney fanatics and newly dubbed tea party connoisseurs, Shelby, Jen and I were dying to try it out.

I decided that an afternoon tea at Disneyland was how I wanted to spend my birthday this year. Jen booked a 12:25 reservation and soon the anticipation set in.

The D23 Expo is my Comic-Con

The bi-annual D23 Expo was held at the Anaheim Convention Center this year in August. The D23 Expo is the Disney version of Comic-Con. It has panels and booths and tons of merchandise. It is the ultimate event for anyone who is a Disney fanatic.

I went to the last D23 Expo in 2013, right after I was hired at Disneyland. When tickets went on sale for Cast Members this year, I snatched up some for myself, Jen, Nate and Shelby, and immediately put in requests to have the weekend off.

To my surprise and utter relief, I got all of the days off that I had requested and enjoyed a fun-filled, sleep-deprived whirlwind weekend of everything Disney.

Try the Grey Stuff (it’s delicious!)

Last week, I invited my friends Jen and Nate over for dinner. Because we share a love of all things Disney-related, we decided to frame our dinner around the song “Be Our Guest” from Beauty and the Beast.

I even went so far as to look up the lyrics to see what sort of food we could attempt to cook. One of the main verses in the song is as follows:

Beef ragout
Cheese souffle
Pie and pudding “en flambe”

Boom, dinner planned.

To me, it was just a rainbow bracelet

I interact with tons of different Guests on a daily basis in the store where I work. Most of them are your usual retail experiences: you give them the spiel, currency is exchanged, small talk small talk, awesome have a nice day!

There are the Guests that stick out and make me my day a little nicer:

  • the super nice Guests
  • the over excited kids
  • the over excited adults
  • the kids that dress up and leave glitter everywhere
  • the adults that Disney-bound and get really pleased when you recognize what character they are
  • the Guests that leave compliments
  • the Guests that haven’t been to Disneyland in ____ years and let me tell you how it was when I was here/it’s changed so much!

And, of course, there are the Guests who make you work for your paycheck. They are the ones that test your patience, your sincerity, your Company and store policies, your sanity and your belief in the good of all humanity.
